Identifying Rain and Storm Damage

While your roof is in place to provide an impenetrable barrier between your home or business and the raging elements, it’s not impervious to damage.  The same wind, rain, and hail your roof keeps out can inflict some pretty significant damage. Rain damage can cause your roof to degrade quickly, resulting in leaks, and even structural damage, if left unresolved. At Mountain Star Roofing we want to be your rain damage roofer in the Southwest.

A rain damaged roof may not be easily seen by the untrained eye. Our Professionals at Mountain Star Roofing will help you and your business identify problem areas. There may be obvious signs, such as water in your attic, or water stains on your ceiling or walls, you may not be concerned about a damaged roof due to rain or storms. However, weather of any extreme, intense sun, ice storms, and excessive heavy rain, can and will take their toll on your roof, leaving behind some less-than-obvious signs of rain damage. One can never underestimate the effects of “mother nature”.

Rain Damage Warning Signs

Missing Shingles – If you see shingles on the ground below your roof, after a storm, this is a sign of rain damage. Shingles become loose, leaving bare spots, which can then cause water damage to your roof’s structure. Frequent storms can also cause a wearing off of the protective granules covering the shingles.  This leaves the shingles more vulnerable to rain damage. If you notice missing shingles, or evidence of the protective granules, in your downspout, contact Mountain Star Roofing.

Curling Shingles and Buckling – When rain damages the integrity of your roof, water can find a way underneath your shingles, causing warping.  This will be apparent in the curling of your shingles or buckling in your roof. If there is buckling, most likely water damage has occurred. This is when you need to call on a Professional roofing contractor for a repair estimate.

Rotting or Mold – When you see mold inside your attic, that means water is coming from somewhere, most likely your rain damaged roof. It may not always be obvious that you have a roof leak due to a recent storm or rain event so it’s important to check your roof or attic every rain season. Another phenomenon that occurs in the colder regions is called ice damming. This is where there is a build up of ice in a region on your roof that you can not generally see. This does not occur in the desert Southwest, but can occur in Southern and Northern New Mexico.

It may be as simple as flashing that’s been pulled away and gone unnoticed, letting rain enter your attic.  Wood-rot is common if the water has been standing a while, either on your roof or inside your attic. In cases where fungus is growing and visible on your roof, that’s usually caused by trees and vegetation. You will want to have your roof inspected as fungus can be a sign of damaged shingles.

Rain and storm damage may not always be a reason for complete roof replacement. You may simply be in need of repairs, and that’s much easier.   However, the only way to know for sure is to have your roof inspected by the professionals at Mountain Star.
